Reduction of Adjective Clauses
Adjective clause কে কখনও কখনও reduce করে adjective phrase করা যায়। আসুন নিচের আলোচনা থেকে দেখে নেই কখন ও কিভাবে adjective clause কে adjective phrase এ রুপান্তর করা যায়।
1.
যখন adjective clause এর clause marker এর পরে আলাদা কোন subject আসবে না শুধুমাত্র তখনই adjective clause কে reduce করা যাবে। কিন্তু যদি এর পরে আলাদা একটি subject থাকে তাহলে ঐ clause কে phrase বানানো যাবে না।
Example: The medicine that was found in the cabinet had
expired.
উপরের Clause টি কে reduce করে phrase বানানো যাবে কারণ ঐ clause এ clause marker ‘that’ এর পরে আর কোন subject নেই অর্থাৎ এখানে that একাই clause marker এবং subject উভয়টির কাজ করে।
Example: The books that they checked out of the
library are due today.
উপরের ‘that thay
checked out of the library’ clause টি কে reduce করা যাবে না কারণ এখানে clause marker (that) এর পরে একটি subject (they) আছে।

Clause কে reduce করতে হলে প্রথমেই clause marker এবং auxiliary verb কে একেবারে বাদ দিয়ে দিতে হবে। তারপর যদি ঐ clause টি active voice এ থাকে তাহলে মূল verb টিকে ‘verb+ing’ form করে ফেলতে হবে আর passive voice এ থাকলে verb এর past participle ই থাকবে।
Adjective clause: The window which overlooks the garden is
broken.
Adjective phrase: The window overlooking the garden is
broken.
উপরের sentence এ clause marker ‘which’ কে বাদ দিলাম এবং কোন auxiliary verb না থাকায় শুধুমাত্র ‘overlooks’ কে তার ‘-ing form’ overlooking করে নিলাম। এইতো কাজ শেষ। আগে ‘which
overlooks the garden’ ছিল একটি adjective clause এখন ‘overlooking the garden’ এ পরিনত হয়ে হল একটি adjective phrase।
Adjective clause: The house that has been built in the
forest doesn’t have electricity.
Adjective phrase: The house built in the forest doesn’t
have electricity.
3.
যদি adjective clause এর মধ্যে clause marker+ to be verb + adjective/prepositional
phrase/noun এরকম থাকে তাহলে clause marker এবং to be verb উঠে যাবে এবং adjective/prepositional phrase/noun থেকে শুরু করে বাকী অংশ (যদি থাকে) একই রকম থাকবে।
Clause: The man who was responsible for the
accident has been caught by the police.
Phrase: The man responsible for the accident has
been caught by the police.
Clause: The books that are on the table belong
to Anny.
Phrase: The books on the table belong
to Anny.
Clause: Her name, which is Nasrin,
contains easy sounds to pronounce.
Noun: Her name, Nasrin,
contains easy sounds to pronounce.
