What is a Clause?

  

“A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a finite verb”

অর্থাৎ Clause হচ্ছে কয়েকটি পরষ্পর সম্পর্কযুক্ত word এর সমষ্টি যেখানে একটি subject এবং একটি finite verb থাকে। তার মানে হলো- একসাথে subject এবং finite verb থাকলে সেটি Clause হবে, নাহলে হবে না।

Example: Hussain made a deal. (Hussain হলো subject এবং made হলো finite verb, সুতরাং এটি একটি Clause)

একটি Clause একটি sentence এর অংশ হতে পারে আবার সে নিজেই একটি sentence হতে পারে।

Example: The baby is sleeping.

(The baby হলো subject এবং is sleeping হলো finite verb, সুতরাং এটি একটি clause; এবং এই একটি clause নিয়েই একটি complete sentence)

I will meet them if they come on time.

(I হলো subject, will meet হলো finite verb এবং them হলো object, সুতরাং ‘I will meet them’ একটি clause; আবার they হলো subject এবং come হলো finite verb সুতরাং ‘if they come on time’ হলো আর একটি clause। এই দুইটি clause নিয়েই একটি complete sentence)

More examples:

·         Mahi is watching TV.                                                   (one clause)

·         The beggar is standing at the door.                              (one clause)

·         The teacher asked a question, but no one answered.   (two clauses)

·          I am happy, because I won a prize.                               (two clauses)

·          I like English, but my brother likes Mathematics  because he wants to become an engineer.                                                                         (three clauses)

What is a Phrase?

“A phrase is defined as a group of related words that lacks both subject and verb and works as part of a sentence.”

অর্থাৎ Phrase হচ্ছে কয়েকটি পরষ্পর সম্পর্কযুক্ত word এর সমষ্টি যেখানে একসাথে subject এবং finite verb কখনই থাকে না । Phrase সব সময়ই sentence এর অংশ হিসেবে বসে; সে নিজে কখনও sentence হতে পারে না।

Example:         He is standing near a wall.

( “near a wall” হলো একটি phrase কারণ এখানে কয়েকটি word আছে কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে subject এবং finite verb নেই।)

Examples:        

He is laughing at a joker.

She is making tea for the guests.

I saw a girl with blue eyes.

He always behaves in a strange way.

The boy in the red shirt is my cousin.

The boy, with a book in his hand, won a prize.

একটি sentence এর মধ্যে এক বা একাধিক phrase থাকতে পারে।

Example: The boy in the red shirt behaves in a strange way.

একটি phrase কোন sentence এর মধ্যে একটি single part of speech এর কাজ করে এবং সে যে part of speech এর কাজ করে তাকে ঐ phrase নামে ডাকা হয়। অর্থাৎ যদি কোন phrase কোন sentence এ noun এর কাজ করে তাহলে ঐ phrase কে noun phrase বলা হয়।

Examples:

He is wearing a nice read shirt.                   (as a noun/object)         

 The people at the party were dancing.       (as a noun/subject)

The man in the room is our teacher.           (as adjective, modifies noun man)

She gave me a glass full of water.             (as adjective, modifies noun glass)

He always behaves in a strange way.        (as adverb, modifies verb behave)

He returned in a short while.                      (as adverb, modifies verb return)
